Ingredients:
Bread:
4 cups all-purpose flour
4 TBSP white sugar
1 tsp baking soda (I definitely accidentally put in a tablespoon of soda, and it came out just fine.)
1 TBSP baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup buttermilk (I added a few splashes extra to get a nice dough)
1 egg
Butter mixture:
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup buttermilk
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
Lightly grease a medium baking sheet
In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, soda, powder, salt, and butter. Stir in buttermilk and egg.
Place dough on a floured surface and knead slightly
Form dough into a rounded loaf shape and place on the prepared baking sheet
In a small bowl, combine melted butter and buttermilk
Brush mixture on top of loaf (keep some mixture to use throughout the baking process)
Use a knife to cut an x on the top of the loaf
Bake until toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, around 45-50 minutes
You can continue to brush the loaf with butter mixture as it bakes
Slice and serve warm with a pad of butter on top!
