Earning My Ears

When you begin training for any new job with Disney Parks & Resorts, you get this little red ribbon that says "Earning My Ears" to attach to your name tag. In theory, this is supposed to encourage guests to go easy on you, and it acts a bit like a security blanket for the new cast member. Today, I removed that little red ribbon and began my journey as a full cast member.

This past week has been a whirlwind of getting to know Fantasyland so that I can serve guests to the best of my ability, learning the daily tasks of my job, and gaining the confidence to create magic. As a member of Disney's custodial force, I get to be on the front lines. This means I help deal with emergencies AND I get to make magic come to life on a daily basis. Sometimes it's a calm voice directing you to the nearest restroom after an unfortunate bird poop incident or even someone saying "Happy Birthday, Princess" that takes a vacation from ordinary to extraordinary.

Yes, my job involves making sure the trash cans are empty and the bathrooms are clean, but I also wear all white so that I am easily accessible for questions. Do you need help finding a ride? Are you wondering what the best place to stop for lunch might be? Do you need to know what time the parade starts?Well don't worry, any custodian can answer your question or direct you to someone else who can.

I have only had a taste of guest interaction during my training, and already it's what I am looking forward to most about the job. When I was a kid, Disney employees took time out of their days to make magical moments for me, and I am so excited to pay this forward. The other day as I walked away from wishing a little girl happy birthday, I heard her say "Mommy, she called me princess!" Then I had the chance to turn a little boy's day around by replacing his spilled ice cream, sprinkles and all.

Walt Disney once said, "If you keep a place clean, people will respect it; if you let it get dirty, they’ll make it worse." This is Disney Custodial's motto, and I plan to do my part to make it a reality. But custodial is so much more than that. We are magicians bringing the dream of a mouse to life.
